CSR stands for Corporate social responsibility has become a hot business topic in recent years and many well-known business people have expressed their support for it:

Niall Fitzgerald
Former CEO, Unilever
"Corporate social responsibility is a hard-edged business decision. Not because it is a nice thing to do or because people are forcing us to do it... because it is good for our business"

Dame Anita Roddick
Body Shop
“The business of business should not be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed”

Warren Buffett
Berkshire Hathaway
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.”

There are many alternative definitions of CSR. Here are two:

1. An obligation, beyond that required by the law, for a business to pursue long term goals that are good for society

2. About how a company manages its business to produce an overall positive impact on society

So CSR involves:
* Conducting business in an ethical way and in the interests of the wider community
* Responding positively to emerging societal priorities and expectations
* A willingness to act ahead of regulatory confrontation
* Balancing shareholder interests against the interests of the wider community
* Being a good citizen in the community

Similarities & Differentiates between CSR and business ethics:

The Similarities are:
* Both are concerned with values, objectives and decisions based on something other than the pursuit of profit
* Socially responsible firms must act ethically

The difference are:
* Ethics concern actions which can be assessed as right or wrong by reference to moral principles
* CSR is about the organization’s obligations to all stakeholders – and not just shareholders

There are four main parts to CSR:

1. Economic: Responsibility to earn profit for owners

2. Legal: Responsibility to comply with the law

3. Ethical: Not acting just for profit, but doing what is right, just and fair

4. Voluntary and philanthropic: Promoting human welfare and goodwill Being a good corporate citizen contributing to the community and quality of life.

Dear Vipin,

Nice to see your reply to what i have posted as a question. Since you have kick started what CSR means right from the scratch, I wish there could be so many posts on what kind of CSR every company we all work is following.

Dear Nisha,

I hope u didnt get me yet.
What I simply meant was, to discuss about the Corporate Social Responsibility which every company(probably listed ones) follows. Like, the activity in your company/mine n so on.

In the least case, I can start with my company's CSR.

CSR MODEL:

TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE APPROACH - "P.P.P"

GIVE FIRST IMPORTANCE TO 1ST P > PEOPLE
GIVE SECOND IMPORTANCE TO 2ND P > PLANET
GIVE THIRD IMPORTANCE TO 3RD P > PROFIT

CSoC in fact is a CSR Initiative by founder group CIER, as we developed this concept and given it to 20000+ people to interact and share their views. We dont charge anyone, but we are been charged.

By this initiative at least few CS students in India are benefited, at least few are connected, at least few are networked, at least few get an opportunity to express their views.....without knowing who has created this club....

For us, CSR is GIVING...WITHOUT GETTING...

*From inputs from CSoC Founder's Office
